About Tsai Chih-Chung
Tsai was born in Chang Hwa County , Taiwan in 1948. At age of 4, he was given a blackboard by his father. It was then that Tsai discovered his passion for drawing and knew that art would always be a part of his life. By fifteen, Tsai left school for Taipei to pursue a career in comics as an assistant in a cartoon company. It was during these formative years, whilst working on three of his own comic books that Tsai was introduced to the works of the Taoist philosopher Zhuang Zi. The teachings of Zhuang Zi were simple, yet powerful, and inspired Tsai to adapt the teachings of Zhuang Zi which appeared in classical Chinese form for comic strips. Using a modern medium to draw a contemporary audience breathed new life into this classical Chinese philosopher's work. This moulding of Tsai talents with his interests in classical Chinese teachings and philosophies would become his very own trademark style. It would not be long until Tsai's work reached to China. In 1989, Tsai's comic; ‘Zhuang Zi Speaks: The Music of Nature' is published in China selling over 15 million copies. Tsai's comics were deemed safe by the Chinese authorities, by both statesmen and scholars alike. There is no denying the popularity of Tsai's books, though the artist ever humble is quick to deflect and accept praise stating that the popularity of his books can only be attributed to the popularity of the teachings of the ancients, and he is only the vehicle and medium that makes it available to the modern world. Tsai's achievements and accolades are long and distinguished. His works have made ancient Chinese teachings, values, and culture available to a whole new generation around the world. Over 100 of Tsai's books have been published in over 25 languages in 45 countries and territories worldwide. More recently Tsai has quietly slipped away from the publishing world, choosing to spend his time in his studio immersing himself in his new passion of studying physics . Tsai is also an avid bridge player often representing Taiwan in tournaments across Asia . His other hobbies include traditional Chinese ink painting, and collecting bronze Buddha's of which he has over 3000 precious statues and figurines. Ever the student and scholar, Tsai's work is not yet complete. The world anxiously waits what Tsai will do next. |
